How do I stay safe on scaffolding at work?

On Behalf of | Jul 13, 2018 | Workers' Compensation

The next time you arrive at work and see scaffolding constructed, you need to make sure you are as safe as possible. Going up on scaffolding can be very scary and nerve-wracking, especially if you aren’t too sure with what could go wrong. So, how do you stay safe on scaffolding at work in Lafayette?

Make sure the scaffolding is built and anchored properly before sending anyone onto it. The scaffolding should be inspected and approved by the site manager. Any issues found should be rectified immediately before you or anyone else gets on the scaffolding.

If the worksite is left unattended at night, the scaffolding should be inspected every morning prior to work beginning. This will help find any issues that could have occurred overnight from vandalism or from weather damage.

Anyone who is assigned to the scaffolding needs to be properly trained before working on it. This could include an on-site training course, an online course or sending the employee to a class at another location. Either way, the employee should be trained before using scaffolding.

You need to wear personal protective equipment when working on scaffolding. This includes nonslip boots, goggles, a hard hat and fall prevention equipment such as a harness and rope.

It’s also a smart idea to understand the load capacity of the scaffolding, especially if you are transporting building materials on it. You don’t want to overload the scaffolding and wind up having it collapse.

Suffering an injury while working on scaffolding can cause you to miss work for an extended time. Make sure you know how to keep yourself safe when on scaffolding in Louisiana.
