What are some of the environmental cleanup programs?

On Behalf of | Jul 27, 2018 | Oil and Gas Law

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was created to protect the environment throughout the country, including Louisiana. The agency is also responsible for creating laws and rules that companies and individuals must follow in order to prevent pollution. So, what are some of the environmental cleanup programs run by the EPA?

The Federal Facilities Cleanup program is activated when environmental cleanup is required at a federal site in Louisiana. These sites can include Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) sites and superfund sites.

The Emergency Response program is activated when immediate danger is present due to pollutants in the environment. The dangers would be to human life, nature and animals.

Superfund Cleanup is a program that is used when the cleanup of an abandoned hazardous waste site needs to occur.

The Brownfields Cleanup program is activated when properties that might be eligible to be used need to be cleaned. This program will assess and then clean the property in question.

A program that is mandated by individual states is the Underground Storage Tank Cleanup (UST) program. This program is activated when there is a storage tank underground that either needs to be repaired, cleaned up or removed.

The Cleaning Up Water program from the EPA is used to test the water quality of all types of waterways to ensure it is clean for drinking, cooking and other uses. This program also provides the public with information on clean drinking water.

The EPA is one of the most important agencies in the country. Pollution violations in Louisiana are serious and should be handled appropriately. You might wind up involved in one of the cleanup programs explained in this post.
